Another Edinburgh Delve

We’ll linger a bit longer in Edinburgh before heading back to Japan. I previously wrote about visiting Ancient Robot Games, but I was hoping to peruse more. Where to, though?

Gathering Information

Proprietor of Rogue Trading at a local market

An unlikely guide to games of Edinburgh appeared. We stopped by a local market and by chance encountered a rogue purveying the finest meads. While I first thought the shop Rogue Trading was named after a certain game, chatting with the proprietor I learned it was actually inspired by his favorite class in D&D, the rogue! I shared that mine is cleric, and a neighboring vendor was curious about what we were talking about. I received some great advice about shops to visit in Edinburgh to go along with my Cask Reserve Mead. All the meads I tasted were delicious, and highly recommended.

Ancient Robot, which I wrote about previously, was high on his list, but he also mentioned the following, which I tasked myself with visiting…

Black Lion

The unimposing shopfront of Black Lion houses a great selection of games, as well as paints. I was particularly impressed by their TRPG selection, which included a section for indie games.

A bookshop with a board game and TRPG section, Blackwell’s was a fun place to browse in old town near South Bridge. For roleplaying games, Dungeons and Dragons and adjacent games were the majority, but I did spot the RuneQuest starter box. One thing setting this apart from game stores is related books being shelved with the game books. They also had a large English-language Manga section.Shelves of board games with a charge helping identify the type of games you might like.

Games Hub

The last shop I visited, Games Hub had a great at-home atmosphere with friendly regulars. It was fun hearing the banter between TCG patrons of all ages. I didn’t venture into the play space downstairs, but the selection of miniatures was staggering. There was of course the new Games Workshop releases, but lots of older releases tucked away on shelves waiting to be found.
